5FW Debate: Cam Ward vs. Ryan Miller

Going to try out a bunch of new features here at 5FW.  There’s nothing wrong with some healthy debate…so let’s start one now.  It’s Game 7…you need either Cam Ward or Ryan Miller to win you a big game…who are you going with?

The case for Ward is a pretty simple one…he’s been there and done that.

In his rookie season, the then-22-year-old was outplayed by Martin Gerber, but got hot towards the end of the year and was named the number one goaltender heading into the postseason.  Ward led the upstart Hurricanes past the Canadiens, Devils and Sabres to advance all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, and made 22 saves in Game 7 to beat the Edmonton Oilers and earn a ring.

Since then, however, Carolina has come back to Earth.  Although Ward has played 60+ games in five of his six seasons since, he’s never been able to recapture the magic of that 2006 run and has made the playoffs only once.

The case for Miller is based more on international play than it is on anything he’s done in a Sabres uniform, but in the long-term, he arguably has a better NHL resume than Ward, even without a ring.

The 32-year-old netminder was named the 2010 Olympic MVP after nearly single-handedly getting the United States to the gold medal game.  Miller made 42 saves in the USA’s improbable 5-3 preliminary round win over Canada, and his only loss came in overtime of the finals on Sidney Crosby’s goal.

Miller was the starting goaltender for the Eastern Conference in the 2007 NHL All-Star Game and was the Vezina Trophy winner in 2010.

So…who are you picking?
