9/19/2012: Hockey Today

— The NHL remains in a lockout.  Discuss.

— Spoke to Locke Jillson today, and am planning on chatting with Nolan Julseth-White later this afternoon…thought it would be neat to do a story on two ECAC rivals joining forces to play in the ECHL with Las Vegas.  Big thanks to Wranglers PR head Rachel Wright for setting all that up.

— Lots of news and notes around the minors and juniors today.  Training camp rosters for a lot of American Hockey League teams are being released, and it’s becoming increasingly evident that the AHL is going to be loaded this year, perhaps even more than it was in 2004-05.

For example, the Charlotte Checkers put out their roster today, and it featured 11 players who played in the National Hockey League last season, including All-Star Jeff Skinner.  Other notables include Zach Boychuk, Riley Nash, Brett Sutter, Justin Faulk, Bobby Sanguinetti and Justin Peters.

Binghamton also put their roster out, and it features a lot of quality young talent as well.  Robin Lehner returns between the pipes for the B-Sens, and he’ll have a lot of help in front of him.  Among those in Binghamtom camp are Mark Borowiecki, Jared Cowen, Tyler Eckford, Chris Wideman, Stephane Da Costa, Hugh Jessiman, Mika Zibanejad and Jakob Silfverberg…who made his NHL debut in the playoffs last season against the Rangers.

— The NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau released their September rankings today.  Halifax’s Nathan MacKinnon and Seth Jones (son of retired NBA player Popeye Jones) figure prominently.

— REO Speedwagon is going to perform after the Milwaukee Admirals game on February 16.  That’s pretty damn cool.

— The ECHL has re-released their All-Star Game website in preparation for the event’s return in 2013.  The league, which not hold the game in 2012, has previously announced that the Colorado Eagles will host it on January 23, 2013.

— Speaking of the Wranglers, the team has signed defenseman Josh Godfrey, who holds the ECHL record for hardest slapshot with a 102.7 MPH blast.  Selected by the Washington Capitals in the second round of the 2007 draft, Godfrey spent most of last season with the AHL’s Binghamton Senators.

— The ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies have acquired Chris Higgins (not the forward who fizzled out with the Rangers a few years back) from the South Carolina Stingrays.  Higgins tallied ten points in nine postseason contests with the Stingrays last year, and was on the 2009 NCAA Champion Boston University Terriers, a team that featured quite a few future NHL’ers.

Also, the Trenton Titans dealt Corey Syvret to the Alaska Aces.  Syvret’s older brother, Danny Syvret, has NHL experience as well.

— The ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets added several players to their training camp roster today…among the notables are former Quinnipiac forward John Dunbar and ex-QMJHL goaltender Francois Lacerte.

— Jack Combs returned to the ECHL’s Colorado Eagles today.  Likely a victim of the lockout, Combs had started out in Colorado last year before being signed to a PTO by the AHL’s Worcester Sharks.  All he did there was record 24 points in his first 25 games en route to earning a full deal.

“It’ll be good to be back in Colorado,” said Combs in a team release.  “I think our team will be really exciting this year and I’m happy to be a part of it.”  As for playing with (ECHL MVP Chad) Costello again, Combs said, “Obviously, we’ve had success together the past couple years; I can’t wait to hopefully pick up where we left off.”

— The OHL’s Ottawa 67’s named Cody Ceci and Sean Monahan as their co-captains today.  The 18-year-old defenseman was drafted 15th overall by the Ottawa Senators this year.
