10/7/2012: Hockey Today

Another day, another pile of camp cuts. But one previously-reported player signing was confirmed by the team, so we’ll lead off with that…

— Matt Gilroy has gotten around lately, as the photo collage above this will indicate. A once highly touted prospect with the Rangers, who was an in-demand undrafted free agent when he signed thanks to his Hobey Baker and national title wins, has since moved on to the Tampa Bay Lightning and then the Ottawa Senators after a relatively disappointing two season run in New York.

Now, the defenseman has signed an AHL deal with the Rangers’ affiliate, the Connecticut Whale. His return to the organization also represents good depth on the blueline should an NHL season actually resume, especially with questions about the future of Michael Sauer.

— The AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals cut five players from camp, with four of them headed to ECHL Cincinnati. Forward Josh Shalla and defensemen Taylor Aronson and Charles-Olivier Roussel were assigned by the club to the Cyclones, while forward Andre Bouvet-Morissette was loaned to the team. Forward Cam Reid was released entirely from his PTO.

— The AHL’s Peoria Rivermen made some significant cuts today, letting go of eight players. Goaltender Paul Karpowich and forwards Brett Sonne, Tyler Shattock and Cody Beach were assigned to ECHL Evansville. In addition, Tyler Shelast, Jesse Perrin, Mike Glaicar and Jesse Durocher were released from their PTO’s. Shelast and Perrin will head to Evansville, while Glaicar will go to Rapid City in the CHL.

— The AHL’s Springfield Falcons, a day after releasing Daren Machesney from his deal entirely, have let go of another goaltender. Mike Clemente, who starred at Brown University and latched on in the AHL at the end of last season, has been assigned to the CHL’s Missouri Mavericks. The Falcons still have 31 players on their roster, including three goaltenders.

— The preseason goaltender shuffling continues elsewhere. Red Wings prospect Petr Mrazek was returned to Grand Rapids one day after playing in a preseason game for Toledo. Similarly, the Flyers shipped Cal Heeter back to Adirondack after he played well for the Trenton Titans in their preseason contest against Reading.

— Former Michigan Wolverines goaltender Shawn Hunwick, who was released by the Las Vegas Wranglers earlier in the week, was signed by the South Carolina Stingrays and picked up the win in their ECHL preseason game today.

— G Drew Palmisano, who was profiled on 5FW not long ago, was among those cut by the ECHL Orlando Solar Bears today. A defenseman named Michael Jordan was also cut…which is notable only because his name is Michael Jordan.

“We had a chance to evaluate our team over the weekend. I met with each of these players individually and thanked them for their hard work in training camp,” said Solar Bears coach Drake Berehowsky in a team statement about those released. “On Monday five new players from Minnesota and Houston will join our line-up. It’s simply a numbers game.”
